Ashtama Shani and Kantaka Shani: Who Has Them Right Now

Ashtama Shani is running for Simha (Leo) Moons and Kantaka Shani for Dhanu (Sagittarius) Moons, and both run for as long as Saturn stays in Meena, which is until June 3, 2027. Both are two-and-a-half-year transits, both are counted from the natal Moon, and neither of them is Sade Sati. No other rashi carries either one.

These are the two transits that go missing in English coverage. Sade Sati has a recognisable name, three rashis and a shelf of books behind it. The eighth-house and fourth-house Saturn transits have none of that, so people meet the terms for the first time in a horoscope report, get alarmed, and then cannot find a page willing to say plainly which sign is affected and when the thing stops.

Ashtama Shani: Saturn in the Eighth from the Moon

Take your natal Moon sign as one and count forward through the twelve rashis. If Saturn is standing on the eighth, you are in Ashtama Shani. Saturn entered sidereal Meena on March 29, 2025 and has not left, and Meena is the eighth from Simha, which puts Simha Moons in the transit and nobody else.

Count it yourself if the geometry feels abstract. Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha, Meena. Eight. Nothing else enters the calculation — no birth time, no ascendant, no degrees — so the answer holds unchanged for as long as Saturn holds the sign.

What is Ashtama Shani for Simha rasi?

It is the transit currently running. Saturn sits in Meenam, the eighth rasi counted from Simmam, and has done since March 29, 2025. Simha Moons keep it through the whole of 2026, because Saturn crosses no rashi boundary at any point in that calendar year. The transit lifts on June 3, 2027, comes back for a short second stretch from October 19, 2027, and ends properly on February 23, 2028.

Tamil sources write it ashtama sani, Telugu and Hindi ones ashtama shani. The eighth house is the one classical texts hand the heaviest reputation to — transformation, joint finances, inheritance, matters concealed and matters concluding — and the transit is traditionally described in terms of obstruction and delay rather than event. I report that as tradition, which is what it is. Where Saturn stands can be computed to the minute. What a year contains cannot.

Kantaka Shani: Saturn in the Fourth

Same method, different house. Count your Moon sign as one, and if Saturn is on the fourth, that is Kantaka Shani. Meena is the fourth from Dhanu, so Dhanu (Sagittarius) Moons hold this one on exactly the same dates the Simha cohort holds theirs.

Kantaka is Sanskrit for thorn, and the traditional gloss is the thorn underfoot: something small that keeps catching, rather than a single reversal you could point at. In English it gets rendered as thorn Saturn about as often as it is left untranslated. You will also see it spelled kandaka sani, which is the same term through a different transliteration and not a separate transit. Marathi and Gujarati households file it under small panoti, against badi panoti for the full seven-and-a-half-year cycle. North Indian writing tends to call it shani dhaiya, and the fourth house it crosses governs home, mother, land, vehicles and peace of mind.

Read from the Moon, the Lagna, or the Arudha Lagna

Here is the wrinkle nobody warns you about. Ashtama Shani is almost always counted from the Moon, in line with Sade Sati. Kantaka Shani is not settled that way. Plenty of practitioners count it from the Moon, some count it from the Lagna, the rising sign at birth, and Jaimini-influenced astrologers often use the Arudha Lagna, the point that stands for how a life is perceived from outside rather than how it is lived from inside.

Three reference points can produce three different answers for one chart, and none of them is a mistake. It does mean that a report contradicting the dates on this page has probably counted from a different starting sign, so the first question to ask of any Kantaka Shani reading is which basis it used. Everything below counts from the Moon.

Both Transits, Dated

Seven rashis out of twelve are carrying nothing at all this year, which is worth stating because the rasi palan format insists on finding something to say about every sign. If yours is in that group, the honest reading for 2026 is that this is not your transit. Every ingress in the table is reproducible, too, which I would rather you test than take on faith: pull Saturn's ecliptic longitude for March 29, 2025 from NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris, apply the ayanamsa correction of roughly twenty-four degrees, and the boundary lands where I have put it.

Ashtama Shani 2026: Nothing Moves

Saturn spends the entire calendar year inside Meena. There is a retrograde loop — vakra from 18:50 UTC on July 26, 2026, direct motion resuming at 21:42 UTC on December 10 — and it drags the planet from about 20 degrees of the sign down to 14 before the ground is recovered. A rashi boundary never comes into it. Simha keeps Ashtama Shani for all twelve months. Dhanu keeps Kantaka Shani for all twelve months. How Many Years Does It Actually Run?

Two and a half is the standard figure, and this cycle is a decent illustration of where the number comes from and how loosely it fits. Saturn holds Meena from March 29, 2025 to June 3, 2027, a little over twenty-six months. Then the retrograde carries it back on October 19, 2027 for a further four months, ending February 23, 2028. Thirty months of transit, spread across a thirty-five-month span.

The gap in the middle is real. For roughly four and a half months in 2027, between early June and the middle of October, Saturn is in Mesha — out of the eighth from Simha and out of the fourth from Dhanu — and neither transit is technically running. Classical practice does not usually name that interval or treat it as a reprieve. The geometry says what it says, and I would rather show the split than round it away.

When Does Mine Come Round Next?

Saturn takes close to thirty years to circle the twelve rashis, so each Moon sign meets Ashtama Shani about once every three decades — two or three times in a normal lifetime, and the same for Kantaka Shani. The next few handovers are already computable, because Saturn's ingress dates are.

Kanya (Virgo) Moons get the first touch of Ashtama Shani on June 3, 2027 and then hold it in earnest from February 23, 2028. Makara Moons pick up Kantaka Shani on the same two dates. Anyone counting down to February 2028 as the end of something should check which sign they are counting from, since the same ingress that closes these two transits opens the next pair.

Push the arithmetic further out and the gaps get long. A Mesha (Aries) Moon is in Sade Sati at the moment, not in either of these, and will not be for years: the fourth-sign transit arrives when Saturn reaches Karka, July 13, 2034 to August 28, 2036, and the eighth-sign one waits for Vrischika and begins December 12, 2043. That is the shape of it for every rashi. Long silences, then two and a half years.

Is Ashtama Shani Worse Than Sade Sati?

Shorter, at any rate. One Saturn stay against three consecutive ones — thirty months against about ninety. Classical sources rate the eighth-house transit severely and a few put it level with the hardest stretch of Sade Sati, so an argument about intensity per year is at least arguable, while an argument about length is not.

I would not run the comparison as a contest, though, because in fifteen years of consultations I have never once found it useful. What matters is which transit you are actually in. They fall on different signs, on different dates, and they are read from different houses, and being frightened of the wrong one is far and away the most common error I see people make in this corner of the subject.
